Parent-Teacher Interviews and Report Cards

This past week, the kids came home with their first report cards and yesterday, I went to meet each of their teachers. All three brought home excellent report cards. I do have to say that I don't agree with the way the report cards are worded, and that it seems to me like pre-written comments that the teachers just cut and paste. Dragon and Fairy had the exact same comments for Drama & Dance for example "name of child communicates for different audiences and purposes with a high degree of effectiveness. Keep up the great work!" I realized that teachers are very busy, but it would be nice to have a bit more personal comments. I remember my report cards when I was little, it was completely personal, maybe a little too much...I always had "talks too much" or "could do better"!
I went by myself to the parent-teacher interviews while Dad stayed home with the kids. I wasn't sure what to expect, I wasn't concerned about their academic performances, having kept track of their progess since their start in October, but I was more curious to hear what the teachers will comment on. I prepared myself to be patient if I heard comments from them about how surprised they were that my children did well in school academically or even socially...
The first teacher I met was Dragon's. She told me how well he was doing, getting along with others. She even shared with me how she had been worried at first that he might get bullied by the other kids since he had never gone to school. I did correct her that he had attended JK and SK. She went through the report card a little bit, and told me about her surprise on his first day, when she had planned a math quiz for the class and decided to give it to him anyway, to see where he was at. He had done perfect on the quiz, and she told me that I had obviously been doing a very good job at home with him. She repeated that compliment a couple more times, assured me that Dragon was doing great, and that there were no concerns for him. I walked out of the first interview with a smile on my face...
The second meeting was with Fairy's teacher. She seemed a bit cold to me at first, but Fairy told me she was nice in the classroom. She told me how well Fairy was adjusting to the class, but that she was a bit too quiet, and not participating enough in oral discussions. On the positive side, she did say that she was doing very well in all subjects (she did get 7 "A" out of 14 marks, the rest were "B") and that she works well without supervision, and is always willing to help others.
She also told me that I had done a really good job at home with her! I thanked her, and I thought we would get back to Fairy's report card, but instead she wanted to know more about homeschooling, where did I get my curriculum from, did I follow the Ontario government recommendations? I didn't get the impression that she was "testing" me, she seemed to be genuinely interested in how it worked! After I explained to her briefly, she told me that it was obvious that I had enjoyed that, and that maybe I should consider going to Teacher's College! She even added that she thought I had missed my calling, but that it was never too late! One major point that I walked away with, besides the compliments (lol), was that grammar and spelling are not covered in school. I was shocked to hear that, I had kept on asking Fairy about it, but thought that maybe she wasn't recognizing it, because maybe it was just built in within her language arts subject. But the teacher told me that no, they don't do it, she agreed with me that it was ridiculous to not cover the basics, but that is what the government has set at this time, and she has to follow it. I told her that we will be doing grammar and spelling at home.
I left that meeting with an even bigger smile on my face, but at the same time, realizing how much I miss homeschooling, and knowing how important afterschooling is, to cover what is lacking in the classroom.
The last meeting was with Princess's teacher, and she started by saying how sweet and wonderful Princess is. She is also adjusting very well, participating, and helping others.
It was nice for me to finally see where my children are spending most of their days. I had been to the school, but not in their classrooms. I am proud of their great start!

Night hat? Help!

I need help! My dear son has been sleeping like this for as long as I can remember...and I have thought many times that he needs a sleeping hat! I asked him the other day if he would wear one, if I sewed him one. He said yes. So I went and searched through my few clothing patterns, nothing there. Searched online, but haven't found much we like. I don't knit, well not very well, and besides, Dragon says the wool would probably make him itchy. I thought of polar fleece, but not sure if that would be too hot...With cotton, an elastic would be needed I imagine, but that wouldn't be comfortable while sleeping...I am not sure what else?
I would love some help on this, and to not worry anymore that my son might tangle himself up too much in his bed sheet. What did boys or men use many years ago? Please leave a comment if you have some help or links for me! Thank you from Dragon and me.

ps. I did sneak and take that sweet picture of him while he was sound asleep...aren't they just so cute when they're sleeping?

Spoiled Kitten?

This is a favourite spot for Clara and Fairy, they both love it! I interrupted her nap by taking the picture...sorry Clara!
Below is another favourite spot of this spoiled kitten. I keep telling Fairy that she can't be carrying that cat around all the time...

Dragon has his share of cuddles too. You can see their favourite spot, and this happens quite often. Clara likes to stretch her paws against him, for some weird reason, this is comfortable and she'll sleep like that until Dragon moves!

Player of the Day Award for Dragon!

Dragon finished his day camp yesterday. He attended a local hockey camp that also included 1 hour of karate scheduled every day. He enjoyed the camp very much. On Thursday, he came home with a surprise. He announced that he had won the Player of the Day Award! He was told that he won it because he was the most polite player in the dressing rooms and he was helpful on the ice by cleaning up the pucks. Sometimes it's the little things that count...Way to go Dragon! The prize included a $25 gift card for a local sport store.

Space Study with Dragon

Dragon and I finished our space study that we started in February. It was a nice little study using the Usborne First Encyclopedia of Space and a workbook called Let's Discover Space.
We have both enjoyed learning more about space, planets, satellites, space missions, aliens....

Dragon enjoyed a few websites that were suggested from the Usborne book. Here are a few of his favourites:

*The ESA (European Space Agency) has a great kids website where you can learn more about space and print a Hipparcos globe or some satellites.

*The Tech Museum of Inovation has a Satellite Site where you can build your own satellite online. There are 3 different kinds and it also gives explanations as you are building.

*For fun, we also liked this Arthur site "Alien: Assembly Required" .

*Last is a BBC site "Your Travel Guide to the Solar System" where you can watch videos about each planet. I personally like this one because it is set up as a travel guide, with sections called "Reasons to Visit", "What to See", and "Local History".

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Dragon and I have finished "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" book. I read it aloud to him. What a great book it was, with many black and white illustrations, mixed with regular text. It talked about George Melies and very early movies. You can find out more about the book at this link.
The YouTube video above shows the Trip to the Moon movie made by G.Melies in 1902. This short movie is a big part of the Hugo Cabret story and Dragon really enjoyed watching it.

Another important part of Hugo Cabret's story is the automaton he finds and repairs. The video above shows an automaton from the Franklin Institute, that is similar to the one in the story because it also writes and draws.
This book was perfect for Dragon, even though it didn't have the usual dragons in it (!). I also enjoyed the art, the story and the setting, since it took place in Paris!

Dragon's Hockey

Dragon had his last game today. He played goalie again. His team didn't win the game, but he saved a lot of shots! Everyone mentioned how great he did.

Lance Mackey Wins the Iditarod!

Dragon's musher Lance Mackey won the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race for the second time. He arrived in Nome, Alaska early today at 2:46am. He took a total of 9 days, 11hrs, 46 mn and 48 seconds to complete the 1150 mile race. You can see pictures from the finish line at the official Iditarod site, here. I also just read that Lance is not planning on resting yet, he is running the 400-miles All Alaska Sweepstakes in a week and a half! We will all follow that race, especially Dragon. It starts March 26, 2008. Here is the website.

We are still tracking our 3 other mushers, Martin Buser (Dad's choice), Zoya DeNure (Fairy's) and Rachael Scdoris (mine). All 3 are still in the race.

* Update: Martin Buser did arrive in Nome on March 12 at 10:11 am, in 5th place.
Fairy's musher is still racing as of March 14, Zoya DeNure is currently in 55th place at the White Mountain checkpoint, and Rachael Scdoris is in 62nd place at the Koyuk checkpoint.

Fairy's Gift to her Brother...

Last weekend, we had a small family birthday party for Dragon. One of the highlights was a gift from Fairy to her brother. She had spent a few days at her Nana's and painted this for him. It was just perfect for him, and I am sure that he will cherish it forever.

Birthday Boy!

Dragon is 9 today! Every birthday is the same thing, I can't believe how fast the time goes...

I thought I would share a few of my favourite pictures of him as a baby and toddler! With his big brown eyes, he was just the cutest little baby boy around...

Happy Birthday Dragon!

Studying Space with Dragon

Last week was the beginning of our Space Study for science with Dragon. He has been asking to do this for a while now, so I finally woke up and decided to put our regular "textbook" science curriculum aside! I am already enjoying learning about space along with him.
I am using the Usborne First Encyclopedia of Space as a spine, and he uses this great little colouring/activity/sticker book that has lots of facts for him to read aloud.
Today's topic was the solar system and through the Usborne book links, we found a great site, an interactive virtual model of the solar sytem. Check it out here and click on "launch planet 10".
