Our Crinkleroot is ready!

We liked the idea from Author Fiesta so we made our own little Crinkleroot guy! We will take him on our neighborhood nature walk this afternoon! We will try to find some trees near us, it might be difficult...we live in a new subdivision and not many big trees are around!

Spelling Practice with Bananagrams Game

We have been using this fun game to practice our spelling! It is similar to Scrabble, but the big difference is that each player works on his own words in front of him. I find that it can still be challenging because you still need to fit the words together. We have been playing with the help of a dictionary for now, and it has been easier for Dragon to come up with words and see the correct spelling in the dictionary.

Author Fiesta for September - Jim Arnosky

We are back to our Author Fiesta schedule for this month with Jim Arnosky. This is one author that I know we will enjoy! He has written many books on nature and animals. Our local library has many of his titles (I think I saw about 65 listed!) so we should keep busy for this month! I will share our favourites with you along the way.

Fist day back to a routine...somewhat!

I had planned to take this week very slowly, easing back into our home school routine. The start date was supposed to be yesterday, but we ended up helping out my cousin by looking after her two adorable little girls for the day (my kids were so pleased to have another day off, lol). Today, Daddy was home, so I knew school work would be minimal and a big bushel of local Roma tomatoes was also ready to prepare for sauce.

Now that the day is done, the tomato sauce is cooling off before going in the freezer in the morning, the children are sound asleep for the night, and Daddy is watching TV downstairs...I can look back and see that we had a productive day. Earlier...I wasn't so sure!

Fairy started her business math by choosing a name and creating a logo for her pet store. She also completed the first lesson in her Growing with Grammar. We read the introduction to the History Odyssey and organized the binder. Dragon worked on the clock unit by Math Mammoth, read 2 chapters from the Railway Children and answered the questions. Even Princess did her calendar work this morning! We also practiced the alphabet song and her letters. She had never showed any interest in letters before, so we are starting from the very beginning!

Considering that my hands were busy for most of the morning processing tomatoes, either peeling them or getting the seeds out or squeezing the extra juice out....I am amazed we managed to get anything done!

Tomorrow will be a lot more quiet and we will take a look at our science. We will be studying chemistry this year, and doing lots of experiments. We are all looking forward to that!

Visit to the county fair

This past Saturday, we all went to a local county fair. There was so much to see!

Many different categories to go through, and so many entries too. The kids liked to find the first, second and third place winner in each section.

The first building had most of the food entries, vegetables, fruits, baked goods, even corn!

Another building had beautiful quilts and hand knitted blankets.

We had a great time in the poultry barn, looking at all the different chickens, pigeons, and birds we never We watched some of the 4H (and pre-4H) kids walk their cows in front of the judge.

We had lunch there, and then watched a tractor pull competition. I had no clue what that was about, and it was really noisy. Dragon and Fairy seemed to enjoy most of the show, and Princess...fell asleep!

Last stop was the dairy barn. A great day at the fair!
