Book Sharing Monday :: Amelia to Zora

Amelia to Zore: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed the World by Cynthia Chin-Lee is a wonderful and inspiring book to share with our daughters. I read this one aloud with Adrienne and we both really enjoyed learning about all these women. Some we had heard about before, like Jane Goodall and Mother Theresa, but others we hadn't or not as much. The book mentioned for example Lena Horne, who just passed away recently. We searched her name and found several youtube videos and listened to her singing. Here is our favourite:

The book does a great job at giving an explanation of what made that particular woman exceptional and how she changed the world. There are artists, activitists, political leaders, writers, and even an ice skating champion.
It has inspired us to find out more about a few of these women, especially Rachel Carson, an environmentalist who was instrumental in banning DDT. We also looked at the art of Frida and Tonita Pena (or Quah Ah).
Each page includes a quote from that woman as well.
I included a couple of our favourites below the photos. You can click on the photos to see them bigger.

"Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others." Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

"The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint always whatever passes through my head, without any other consideration." Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

"We have a choice to use the gift of our life to make the world a better place - or not to bother." Jane Goodall (1934-)
