When Celeste heard me talk about this, she said she wanted to share her current favourite poem. She has memorized a few this year, but her top favourite one is The Caterpillar by Christina G. Rossetti (the Well Trained Mind version). She wanted to recite it for you today:
The Caterpillar by Christina G. Rossetti
Brown and furry,
Caterpillar in a hurry;
Take your walk
To the shady leaf, or stalk.
May no toad spy you,
May the little birds pass by you;
Spin or die,
To live again a butterfly.
Sweet video! My daughters love this poem as well, although we found the original to use slightly more evocative expression. Not sure why the author of First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind felt compelled to alter it!

To the shady leaf, or stalk,
Or what not,
Which may be the chosen spot.
No toad spy you,
Hovering bird of prey pass by you;
Spin and die,
To live again a butterfly.
