Book Sharing Monday :: More Poetry Books!

This series is wonderful. The Poetry for Young People by Sterling Publishing is a great way to introduce poetry to children. Scholastic has reprinted many of the titles and I have been fortunate to find a few at our local thrift store!
We are reading through these this month. Each book has an introduction, which is a short biography of the poet, selected poems follow, some with explanations of the poem or words defined.

Here are two of our favourites:

"I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us - don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
to an admiring bog!"
Emily Dickinson.

How Doth the Little Crocodile
"How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!
Lewis Carroll.

  1. Scholastic did a great job with that series. I had them when I was teaching and I bought them for a number of people as presents. I loved the way they made poetry more accesible for younger readers.

  2. So far my son has been enjoying Guyku, thanks for the recommendation. And the Poetry For Young People collection are also at our library, so I put a few on hold--thanks!

  3. We love the Poetry for Young People series, too!

Over at Rockhound Place I have poetry books for Patriots' Day, which is a uniquely New England-y holiday commemorating the first battles of the Revolutionary War.

Wishing you much fun during Screen Free Week, Alex!

  5. We love this poem too. Grace memorized and recited it for her audition for Alice in Wonderland. We thought it fitting because of the same author.
    Blessings
