Pirates Lapbook by Adrienne

Adrienne completed her lapbook on Pirates last week. I am very happy with her work!
Last month, I had asked Andre and Adrienne to both select a topic and present their research
in either a lapbook or notebook format.
The mini books and set up of the lapbook were all their choices.
Adrienne read a ton of books on pirates
and decided which information to include in her lapbook.

The following photos show you the inside of the lapbook
and details on some of the mini books.
At the end of the post, I added a list of all the mini books included.

Mini books:

Food: What Pirates at and drank
Pirates around the world
Nautical and piratical terms
What is a pirate?
Jobs (on board)
Forms of punishment
Women pirates
Inside a captain's cabin
Famous pirates flags
Weapons
Famous and infamous pirates
Bucanners, privateers and pirates
Bibliography
Pirate flags by our family (drawings)
Sizes of ships

Here are two more photos to show an overall view of the lapbook.

Penguin Notebook by Celeste (with Adrienne's help)

The girls worked on this little notebook together. All I did was print a few worksheets that Adrienne chose. They read a few books on penguins, completed the worksheets, and put it together in a notebook.
Celeste's first notebook!
The printable worksheets came from Lapbook Lessons.

Greek Gods Notebook

Notebook cover with Hermes colouring page

Andre and I worked on a Greek Gods Notebook over the last couple of weeks. He has always been interested in Greek Mythology, and with our current read aloud of the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan (we're are on the second one), he wanted to learn more about the Greek Gods.

The first page in his notebook is a map of Ancient Greece.

I asked him to draw a map/picture of the Underworld and we included a description as  well, listing the rivers, the regions and Charon.

On this page, we have a book list of all the books we read to learn more about Greek Gods, this included reference books and myths. His top three favourite myths are listed. The creatures mini book has bits of information about each creature that Andre chose.

We made these character cards about his favourite Greek Gods, including a few details like what they look after, their parents or origin, if they are married and to whom, and their symbols. We are hoping to find some clip art that would fit nicely on the cards.

This page has a list of the 12 Olympians and an explanation of who the Titans were.

Another colouring page, Athena.

Here are a few of the books we used for our Greek Gods study.

This was a fun project! Andre and I worked on this notebook together, just the two of us, deciding what to include. As much as pre-made lapbooks are useful and probably more thorough, I find that it is more relevent and fun whenever we build our own.

Mythical Creatures Lapbook

It's complete! Adrienne did all the work for this lapbook and I think it turned out wonderful! Mythical creatures are a favourite subject in our house, and her brother has enjoyed reading the mini-books of this lapbook. We have started working on a Greek Gods and Monsters Lapbook a few days ago. A nice project just for him and myself...I will post about this soon.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Day to Daddy. Unfortunately he is at work today, but we will be having dinner together tonight. "Daddy" is a wonderful dad, funny, hard-working, supportive and always there for all of us.
The girls and I baked a carrot cake this morning for dessert tonight, and to follow our Summer Kids Cooking Camp. We also read "Carrot Soup". Princess and I were not very successful at finding carrot books at our library!

Fairy also finished the cover of her Father's Day lapbook, drawing a picture of Daddy and herself riding their bikes together. You can see the rest of the lapbook here. She will be giving it to him tonight.

Father's Day Lapbook - Almost Finished!

Fairy worked on her Father's Day Lapbook last week. She only has to design a cover and add some "decorations" through out the lapbook. All the mini-books are completed, but we did leave out a few from the original instructions. You can see how to find this free resources in my last post "Father's Day Lapbook" . I will post pictures of the complete project soon.

Father's Day Lapbook

We started our Father's Day Lapbook today. So far, just Fairy and I are doing it. I had found this lapbook free from the Live and Learn Press website. If you are interested, all you need to do to be able to download the lapbook is sign up on their Yahoo Group (it's free).
Today, we have to find the origins of this holiday in the USA and basic information.
Here are a few sites we visited to find our answers:
Father's Day on Wikipedia
Hallmark Corporate Information on Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd on Wikipedia

I will post more as we go along in our Father's Day Lapbook...

St Patrick's Day Lapbook

Here is our St-Patrick's Day Lapbook! We had a lot of fun learning about Ireland, leprechauns, Irish legends and even counting the Lucky Charms!

Fairy put together the Pot of Gold game by painting a yogurt container black and some cardboard coins sparkly gold! The game can be found here.

St Patrick's Day Study!

We just completed our Iditarod Study and we are now onto our St Patrick's Day Unit Study.

We started on Thursday by doing some Lucky Charms graphing! It was one of the activities from a Free Live and Learn Press Learn'N Folder, that can be found here. I decided to use the whole box of the Lucky Charms! The kids first predicted which shape they thought would have the most and the least, then they divided up each type of marshmallow in separate bowls. Next they counted each shape and recorded their findings in a bar graph. Finally, they were able to eat some too!

We are creating another lapbook for this theme, and learning a lot about this holiday and Ireland, and Irish fairy tales and legends. I have included a list books we are reading on the left side.
We are also in the middle of making a Pot of Gold game. I will post pictures when it is completed. Fairy and Dragon have been sewing felt shamrock shapes. Fairy is finished and stuffed hers like a little pillow.
