Book Sharing Monday :: Amelia to Zora

Amelia to Zore: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed the World by Cynthia Chin-Lee is a wonderful and inspiring book to share with our daughters. I read this one aloud with Adrienne and we both really enjoyed learning about all these women. Some we had heard about before, like Jane Goodall and Mother Theresa, but others we hadn't or not as much. The book mentioned for example Lena Horne, who just passed away recently. We searched her name and found several youtube videos and listened to her singing. Here is our favourite:

The book does a great job at giving an explanation of what made that particular woman exceptional and how she changed the world. There are artists, activitists, political leaders, writers, and even an ice skating champion.
It has inspired us to find out more about a few of these women, especially Rachel Carson, an environmentalist who was instrumental in banning DDT. We also looked at the art of Frida and Tonita Pena (or Quah Ah).
Each page includes a quote from that woman as well.
I included a couple of our favourites below the photos. You can click on the photos to see them bigger.

"Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others." Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

"The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint always whatever passes through my head, without any other consideration." Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

"We have a choice to use the gift of our life to make the world a better place - or not to bother." Jane Goodall (1934-)

International Postcard Swap ~ Received! *UPDATED*

We have received all our postcards from the International Postcard Swap, and some new stamps for our collection!

We received two from Florida, USA. One was from Lake City and the other from Jacksonville. A lovely red phone booth postcard came from London, England. We also had mail from Spain, from a village near Barcelona, and the last to arrive was from Poland.

** I forgot to add the link for the International Postcard Swap!! The swap is closed now, but there might be more in the future. Playing by the book hosted this wonderful swap.

Art and Afternoons at the Park

For the last 3 weeks, Adrienne has been attending an art class for homeschool girls. Today was the last one, and she finished painting the jewelery box. The flowers in the vase and the cat were done during the first 2 weeks. I love the cat, it looks like Clara.

While Adrienne was at her art class, we went to a nearby park. This park was beautiful and had many squirrels and frogs. There are not many tall trees near our home, so we don't see squirrels often anymore. Celeste was so excited to see how close they would come to us! Andre had a great time catching frogs to show Celeste and then letting them go in the woods.
